Nicolas BuchsDoctor Nicolas C. Buchs is Consultant surgeon in the Division of Digestive Surgery.

He studied in Geneva, notably in College Calvin where he won the prize of the city of Geneva for the best results. He studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva, where he obtained his medical degree in 2005, before starting his training in surgery in the Division of Surgery of the University Hospitals of Geneva. In 2007, he obtained the title of Doctor in Medicine (MD) for his work on vascular invasion in pancreatic cancer. In 2009, he obtained a fellowship grant to carry out a one-year fellowship at the University of Illinois (Chicago, USA) in robotic surgery with Professor Pier. C. Giulianotti. He came back to Geneva in 2010 and was appointed junior consultant, before being FMH specialist in surgery. In 2014, Doctor Buchs obtained a second grant for a 2-year fellowship at the prestigious Oxford University (United Kingdom), under the direction of the famous Professor Neil Mortensen. There, he developed his clinical interest in surgery for rectal cancer and chronic inflammatory bowel disease. During these 2 years, Doctor Buchs continued his research in new approaches in the treatment of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and in the treatment of rectal cancer (organ preservation, TaTME ). This interest in surgery of the rectum allowed him to obtain his Privat-Docent in 2015 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva. Moreover, he passed his European examination (EBSQ) in coloproctologic surgery  and obtained the 2016 Lars Palhman medal for the best results. 

Thereafter, Doctor Buchs came back to Geneva and was nominated Consultant surgeon. He became FMH specialist in Digestive Surgery in 2019, and Lecturer at the University of Geneva the same year.

During his career, Doctor Buchs has pursued a line of research mainly focused on new surgical technologies, teaching and colorectal surgery, which led him to have more than 150 scientific publications, 10 book chapters, and more than a hundred presentations at national and international congresses.

Doctor Buchs is also Director for operative scheduling, Member of the theatre committee, Director of digestive semiology, Member of the clinical skills office) and digestive surgical referent for endometriosis.
