The recent consensus conferences of the European Committee of Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM) and the European Underwater and Baromedical Society (EUBS), which were held in April 2016, revalidated the following therapeutic recommendations:

  • Prevention of osteoradionecrosis after dental extraction
  • Mandibular osteoradionecrosis
  • Soft tissue radionecrosis
  • Anaerobic or mixed infections
  • Diabetic foot lesion
  • Compromised skin graft or musculocutaneous flap
  • Ischemic ulcers
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Sudden deafness
  • Stage IV neuroblastoma
  • Postanoxic encephalopathy
  • Radio-induced CNS lesion
  • Reperfusion injury following vascular surgery
  • Reimplantation of a body part
  • Burns, min. 2nd degree, > 20% body surface
  • Acute ischemic ophtalmological problems
  • Chronic, non-progressive wounds in inflammatory processes
  • Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, etc.

To this list was added the treatment of sequelae of stroke, in certain conditions.

There are few randomized prospective studies about the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). However, ten clinical indications are currently the subject of a type 1 (highly recommended) or type 2 (recommended) recommendation.

In Switzerland, TARMED currently recognizes five indications:

  • Chronic and late-onset post-radiation lesions
  • Acute osteomyelitis of the jaw
  • Chronic osteomyelitis
  • Decompression sickness
  • Diabetic foot syndrome at stage 2B
