chirurgie de l’obésité

Obesity is a chronic disease that can be complicated by many conditions, such as diabetes (FR), hypertension (FR), cardiovascular diseases (FR), sleep apnoea (FR), musculoskeletal problems (FR) (arthritis, back pain, herniated discs, osteoarthritis in the hips, …) and infertility.

How do you measure obesity ?

Obesity is measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in meters) :

Weight(kg)/(Height(m) x Height(m))

BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 = overweight
BMI 30.0-34.9 kg/m2 = moderate obesity or grade I obesity
BMI 35.0-39.9 kg/m2 == severe obesity or grade II obesity
BMI ≥ 40.0 kg/m2 = morbid obesity or grade III obesity

+ INFO
The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled since 1980 according to the World Health Organization. In Switzerland, it affects 11% of men and 9% of women.
