The Tumor Boards
The HUG’s Cancer Center is organised around several Tumor Boards that cover most cancer pathologies. These multidisciplinary meetings bring together experts in all the specialisms involved in cancer care and treatment. The examination of each patient's situation takes all the aspects of the disease into account. This expert group then proposes an investigation or treatment plan based on a consensus. This is focused on best clinical practice as stipulated by international recommendations. The final decision on the treatment to be followed is always made by the patient together with his/her doctor.
The tumor boards meet on a weekly basis and comprise the following specialisms :
- Specialist surgeons
- Nuclear doctors
- Oncologists
- Pathologists
- Radio-Oncologists
- Radiologists
Added to this core of experts are specialists in the organ affected, namely : dermatologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, hematologists, infectologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, onco-geneticists, onco-gynecologists, orthopedists, ENT, plastic surgeons, pulmonologists.
The Tumor Board meeting room is equipped with a video-conferring system to facilitate the sharing of medical expertise with other public and private health institutions.
Patients under the care of a local doctor may request, through his/her intermediary, that their case be presented to the Tumor Boards.
Doctors do indeed have the opportunity to present their cases to the Tumor Boards in line with the calendar drawn up and managed by the Cancer Center secretariat. Case files are referred through the secured platform My HUG.
