Mission of the Bacteriology Laboratory

The Bacteriology Laboratory runs bacteriological analysis of hemocultures, urine, stool, respiratory system samples, cerebrospinal fluids, pus and various smears and punctures. These analyses are aimed to provide evidence for aerobic and anaerobic pathogenic germs, fungus and mycobacteria. Identification of bacteria, mycobacteria and fungus is done by mass spectrometry and with automated or semi-automated molecular biology techniques such as PCR, hybridization and sequencing.

The antibiotic sensitivity testing performed establishes which antibiotics to prescribe and confirms certain specific resistance profiles such as, for example, BLSE, MRSA or MDR.

Regarding routine bacteriological analyses and research projects, a very close intra-hospital collaboration was established over the years to include Dental Medicine, Infection Control, Intensive Care, Pediatrics (in the search for causes of osteomyelitis), Reconstructive Surgery (involvement in the Noma project), Pharmacy and the Center for Cell Therapy (relevant to quality controls) as well as the Center for Blood Transfusions (within the scope of hemovigilance).
