The movement for more sustainable healthcare is expanding thanks to the efforts of the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG), the International Hospital Federation (IHF) and the Geneva Sustainability Centre.

On the 2nd of December 2022, the HUG and the IHF met at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters, with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, and his climate officer, Dr. Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health. This meeting was the occasion to talk about the necessity for healthcare leaders to engage in sustainable actions and to move towards carbon neutrality.

The recent creation of the Geneva Sustainability Centre, with the help of the HUG, will provide crucial support to leaders in the healthcare sector on their journey towards sustainability. The goal of the Geneva Sustainability Centre is to raise the knowledge, skills and resources to ensure the transition to climate-resilient healthcare.

The HUG are committed to sustainable practices and have been recently awarded by the IHF for their excellence in corporate social responsibility. Last friday, the HUG were congratulated for their leadership in sustainable actions and Dr. Tedros encouraged Bertrand Levrat, Director-General of the HUG, to continue this commitment:

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, I have experienced up close the dedication and commitment of the University Hospitals of Geneva to deliver care under the most trying circumstances for the people of this city. At the same time, HUG remained committed to protecting the health of our planet through a commitment to sustainability. I applaud Mr Levrat and all who work at HUG for their tireless efforts to care for both the people of Geneva and our environment.
