Rectus abdomini diastasis is a spacing of more than 2 cm between the rectus abdomini muscles. It can be congenital or acquired, for example after pregnancy.

In general, rectus abdomini diastasis is not an indication for surgical treatment. Weight loss, as well as targeted strengthening exercises, are recommended.

Exceptional surgical management of diastasis of the rectus abdomini muscles

In some rare situations, surgical treatment is indicated. It includes performing an abdominoplasty, which involves removing excess skin from the abdomen and tightening the healthy skin around it, and bringing the rectus abdomini muscles together. This treatment is carried out by the Division of Plastic Surgery.

Sometimes, an umbilical hernia is associated with diastasis of the rectus abdomini muscles and is treated by our team during the same procedure.
