Even though the personnel in these areas are equipped with appropriate protection for handling antineoplastic drugs, surface contamination is often considered as a focal point for potential dissemination of contamination into adjacent areas

Samples can be performed in healthcare units where chemotherapies are stored, administered, and disposed of. Healthcare personnel handle chemotherapies for patients on a daily basis, posing a risk of exposure. Assessing surface contamination provides a simple and non-invasive method to evaluate this risk. Additionally, potentially contaminated areas are clearly identified.

The teams in analysis laboratories, research, and development handle antineoplastic drugs contained in biological fluids, pharmaceutical formulations, or even in the environment. They are therefore exposed to these toxic agents. Assessing surface contamination is a simple and non-invasive way to evaluate the protective measures applied to eliminate any risk of exposure.
Examples of sampling points include:
- Work surfaces in biological safety cabinets (BSC) and benches,
- Handles of BSC airlocks, refrigerators, doors,
- Personnel gloves,
- Keyboards, mice, or computer screens,
- Storage areas for antineoplastic drugs or other products in contact with these substances (refrigerators, freezers, shelves),
- Administration systems such as infusion pumps or IV stands,
- Surfaces in areas where chemotherapy or other biological products from individuals undergoing chemotherapy are disposed of,
- Equipment used by personnel (disinfectors, refractometers, pipettes, balances).
